During the CPR/AED portion of the class, students learn the concepts of the chain of survival, how to recognize someone who needs CPR, and how to perform high quality CPR for both adults, children and infants. Participants learn how to give breaths using mouth to mouth, and how to utilize barrier devices. Students learn how to use an AED on an adult, child and infant. Participants learn how to recognize when someone is choking, and how to help a choking adult, child and infant. Students also learn how to work with other bystanders to help the victim.

During the first aid portion of the course, students learn their roles and responsibilities as first aid rescuers. They learn how to put on and remove protective gloves. They learn how to assess the problem, and how to treat the following life-threatening emergencies: heart attack, difficulty breathing, choking, severe bleeding, shock, and stroke. Participants learn how to use an epi pen, control bleeding, how to bandage, recognize common injuries, and illnesses. Participants learn how to find information about preventing illnesses and injuries.
